Home | About us | Trustees

The trustees at SNAP have a very important role – they are responsible for the direction and performance of the charity. As volunteers, they give their time and considerable skills and experience to ensure SNAP stays true to the vision and mission by monitoring and controlling the activities. They are each selected to govern the charity as they have a particular skill or perspective that will further the good services we provide to children and families.

We are fortunate to have a great Trustee Board, supportive and experienced, whose skills cover finance, strategy, disability, leadership and collaborative working together with 50% of board members also being a parent of a disabled child.

Bexley SNAP’s Board of Trustees are:

  • Alan Milner, Chair | Bexley SNAPAlan Milner

Alan is proud to be one of the founders of SNAP and the Chair for nearly 20 years. His son Matthew has severe learning difficulties, he was and continues to be the driving force behind Alan’s influential role in championing the rights agenda of disabled children and equally in highlighting the difficulties families face with a disabled child.  Alan is also a Regional Campaign Officer at Mencap covering the London area.
  • Shaun Farrell OBE, Vice-Chair | Bexley SNAPShaun Farrell OBE

Shaun spent 40 years in the private sector before retiring from the post of Chief Executive of the Church of England Pensions Board in 2011. He sits on the Board of two other organisations and his experience includes finance, property, strategy and information technology. His wife Carolyn spent over 20 years working in a school with disabled children.

  • Joan Ratcliff, Trustee | Bexley SNAPJoan Ratcliff

Joan came to Bexley some 16 years ago to set up and run the Autism Advisory Service. Her work as both mainstream and specialist teacher over many years has given her insight into the many rewards and challenges families face in bringing up a child with additional needs. Her understanding of the local authority policy and practice as well as changing trends in support services for disabled children has proven an asset to SNAP over her time as a trustee.

  • Ruth Hambrook, Trustee | Bexley SNAPRuth Hambrook

Ruth has recently retired after working 29 years for London Borough of Bexley. She has worked in a range of educational settings and for the last 19 years has worked in an advisory capacity supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs. As the Advisory Teacher for ADHD, she worked closely with paediatricians, parents, schools to support children and young people in their educational and home environments.

Our Patron

We are also honoured to have a distinguished patron, Steve Backley OBE, who brings his warmth, compassion and considerable influence to promote the work we do with disabled children in Bexley. Steve is not only an Olympic champion and former world record holder for javelin throwing, he is a great motivator and believes in enabling every individual to be the best they can possibly be.

What really helped me was to discover that I was not alone and that there were many other parents/carers just like me, with one or more disabled children to care for.
